In NHS trusts and core organisations in England, community matron full time equivalent roles fell from 1,518.6 in September 2009 to 752.6 in May 2026. That is a 50.4 per cent fall, while headcount fell 47.1 per cent.
Over the same period, modern matron full time equivalent roles rose 14.4 per cent and nurse manager roles rose 75.3 per cent. The data show a changing role mix rather than proof that senior clinical oversight has disappeared.
NHS England guidance gives matrons responsibilities for governance, patient safety and quality. Recent inspection and assurance material has also valued visible matron leadership, which raises a question about how that work is located when management roles are differently coded.
The dataset excludes primary care and some community employers, and title changes or organisational change can affect role coding. It cannot show by itself what any individual trust has gained or lost, but it does make the shift in recorded roles worth examining.
